If you are easily offended, please prepare yourself prior to reading this post. I am aware that I have very controversial views.
I was born in 1972 in the mountains of Southwestern Virginia. I am a natural born citizen of the United States of America, so are my parents and so were my maternal and paternal grandparents and great grandparents. My birth certificate says I am Caucasian/White but my skin tone, facial features, body structure and hair color say otherwise. Somewhere in my family tree is a Native American. It is quite possibly my great grandmother, a Cherokee or Chickasaw Indian. I have not been able to find any type of official government record that gives definitive proof, just stories from the past and a photograph that shows my great grandmother with dark skin, black hair and Native American features wearing English clothing.
Over the past 10 years or so, I have noticed that I do not fit in with the conventional American way of thinking. I still believe this country is the Land of Opportunity, The Melting Pot of the World. I still believe the United States of America can be a great place to live. This country and our government is based upon the beliefs that all people are created equal, we have the right to freedom of speech and we have the right to choose our religion and not be persecuted for the color of our skin or the god we choose to believe in. However, there is a growing trend in Americans today, to rid our country of “non-Americans”.
We have a black President, so what. We have Muslims building community centers several blocks from Ground Zero, so what. We have Hispanics and Latinos working jobs that many Americans are too proud or too lazy to work, so what. We have people who don’t speak English, so what. Yes, I understand that there are those who are in our country illegally, but that does not give you or anyone else the right to lump all of us who are here legally into whatever category you choose just based on the color of our skin.
If you don’t like the fact that someone from some other country is doing a job for less money, get off your ass and go get that job. I am sure if you weren’t too proud to work for $7 an hour, the boss would rather hire you. There might not be as many communication problems because you both speak the same language. You have to level the playing field to compete. Once you are competing, then you have more leverage to ask for better wages. Don’t just sit on your couch and bitch on your Facebook page or blast emails about the country going to hell in a hand-basket.
It seems to me that many of us have forgotten why this country was founded in the first place, freedom from the Church of England (religious persecution for not believing the way the King/Queen believes), the right to be treated as an equal and the right to choose our faith without the tyranny of a king or queen and their “loyal subjects” telling us what to do. Those are the reasons the colonists came to America and fought the British to stay here. Those ARE STILL the reasons why people continue to immigrate to the United States.
Please do not send me any emails/literature/Facebook posts containing the following phrases:
1. If you can’t speak the language, get out
2. You want to live in our country, learn the language
Please do not send me any emails/literature/Facebook posts containing any of the following:
1. Anything derogatory about any one color or ethnic group
2. No derogatory name-calling: black, negro, colored, spics, chink, jap, dego, rag-head, towel-head, camel-jockey, sand rat, wetback, etc (For those of you who think I am being crass, some of my ‘friends’ and family members don’t realize these particular words are not acceptable because they are used frequently in their everyday language.)
3. No bashing another religion. I don’t care what your religious beliefs are. That’s the beauty of freedom of religion. Don’t send it to me.
4. No bashing any sexual preference of any kind.
5. Don’t send me any pro-life or pro-choice views.
6. If it is of a political nature, be sure to check it for the above content before you send it to me.
If you disagree with me, that is your right and that’s fine. Just be mindful, because the way I see it, unless you are Native American, this land does not belong to you, either.
This was Native American Indian land and the British seized it. The American Indians were here first. We, the “white people” came to this country with bias and moved the people who lived here out of their homes, moved them off their lands and denounced their religious beliefs as pagan rituals. You would be pissed if someone did that to you today. We have no right to this ‘land’. It is only our privilege to live here.
So before you send another email or post another message with the “if you don’t speak the language, get out” type of message, check yourself. Do you speak some form of Na-Dené or Algic? I don’t.
